The Hotel

The Star Hotel Bed & Breakfast is a historic site, completely renovated in 2004, located right in the southern heart of North Carolina. Built in 1896, The Star Hotel Bed and Breakfast was located at the junction of two major railways in North Carolina. Where the North/South railway met the East/West railway, many times the passengers would get off the train and would have to spend the night waiting for the train to pass the next day. Even though they didn’t call it a Bed & Breakfast back in those days, in essence, it was exactly that. People would spend the night, wake up and eat breakfast and take off again. The Star Hotel Bed and Breakfast is the perfect place to stay, with Pinehurst and Troy only a short driving distance away as well as Charlotte, Greensboro, and Raleigh all within equal distance.

Starworks

Starworks strives to engage the community with artwork and artists of the highest caliber. Starworks is a project of Central Park NC. In rural areas, residents often live in cultural deserts, and too often access to the arts is limited to a narrow range of artistic vision, vernacular imagery and craft styles. Through strategic partnerships with other artists, arts organizations and businesses, Starworks has been working to increase the diversity of artistic experiences available by bringing nationally and internationally known artists for demonstrations, classes, lectures and to make new works of art. Its programs are targeted to professional makers, with additional programming for young adults and children.

Lake Tillery

Swimming, boating, boat rentals, fishing, water sports. The fishing and boating are great! Numerous, attractive lake-front housing communities provide residents with year-round enjoyment of this popular destination. Lake Tillery is a reservoir between Falls Reservoir and Blewett Falls Lake in the Uwharrie Lakes Region of North Carolina. It is entirely within Stanly County and Montgomery County. The lake was created by impounding the Pee Dee River, which is formed by the confluence of the Yadkin River and the Uwharrie River several miles to the north. Norwood, in neighboring Stanly County, uses as its town motto “Gateway to Lake Tillery”.

Uwharrie National Forest

Where you can go horseback riding, hiking, hunting, canoeing, off-roading, and recreational panning for gold at Reed’s Gold Mine! Uwharrie National Forest is a federally designated national forest located primarily in Montgomery County, but also extending into Randolph and Davidson counties in south-central North Carolina. It is the smallest of the four National Forests in North Carolina, with a total area of 50,645 acres, and has a local ranger district office in Troy. There is one officially designated wilderness area within the forest, the 5,025-acre Birkhead Mountains Wilderness. The forest derives its name from the Uwharrie Mountains, the ancient mountains atop which most of the forest sits.

History

Town Creek Indian Mound

Offers a glimpse of pre-Columbian life which brings to life a rich cultural heritage from the buried past. Town Creek Indian Mound is an unusual phenomenon in the history of North American archaeology. While most archaeological sites are investigated for a few years before archaeologists move on to new locations, Town Creek, situated on Little River (a tributary of the Great Pee Dee in central North Carolina), has been the focus of a consistent program of archaeological research for more than half a century.

North Carolina Zoo

The North Carolina Zoo is located on 2,600 wooded acres centrally located in the heart of North Carolina, just south of Asheboro in Randolph County. With 500 acres developed, it is the world’s largest natural habitat zoo and one of two state-supported zoos. It houses 1,800 animals of more than 250 species, primarily representing Africa and North America. It’s open 363 days a year and receives more than 900,000 visitors annually!

Golf

Pinehurst

Pinehurst is a village in Moore County, North Carolina. It is home to the historic Pinehurst Resort, a golf resort which has hosted multiple United States Open Championships. The village lies adjacent to the Pine Needles Lodge and Golf Club, which has hosted multiple U.S. Open tournaments in women’s golf. A large portion of the central village, including the resort complexes, is a National Historic Landmark District, designated in 1996 for its landscape design and its significance in the history of golf in the United States. Pinehurst has been designated the “Home of American Golf” by the United States Golf Association, which announced a second headquarters in the village in 2020. The area is also known for its strong equestrian community, has hosted the former Stoneybrook Steeplechase, and currently maintains the Pinehurst Harness Track. Fox hunting is also a common sport in the area.

Pottery country

Seagrove

Nestled in the countryside of North Carolina you will find the largest concentration of working potters in the United States. Enjoy your day on a self-guided driving tour down some of North Carolina’s scenic byways. Within a 20-mile radius there are over 50 pottery shops to visit. Set your own pace as you go from shop to shop; you’ll most likely be greeted by the potters themselves. Seagrove offers a range of pottery, from functional everyday use, contemporary, sculptural and folk art to historical forms from the past. Make plans to spend a day or two to discover Seagrove and experience the diversity of North Carolina pottery. Seagrove is open year round, and shops are open nearly every day of the week throughout the whole year.
